Summary: Katherine Warren, M.D., is a no-nonsense pediatrician who serves the small and suffering in a Texas barrio clinic. She thinks she's seen it all, but then it all hits home. Her ten-year-old son is brought to the edge of death by a medical accident in a dentist's office. Inhaltsangabe: Katherine Warren, M.D., is a no-nonsense pediatrician who serves the small and suffering in a Texas barrio clinic. She thinks she's seen it all, but then it all hits home. Her ten-year-old son is brought to the edge of death by a medical accident in a dentist's office.
Katherine; her CPA husband, Sam; her family and her scientific colleagues - the finest minds and biggest hearts - rally to the aid of the boy, who is locked in darkness.
Sam and Katherine, twin towers of rationality, must come to terms with difficult yet sustaining truths. When all seems lost, this is what remains:  Below hope, beyond the reach of religion or science, at the point of surrender lies something in our trembling center that keeps us going. A small, quiet mystery. A little something.

From the Author: David Brooks, in a New York Times column (March 2014), wrote this: " The theologian Paul Tillich has a great essay in 'Shaking the Foundations' in which he observes that during moments of suffering, people discover they are not what they appeared to be. The suffering scours away a floor inside themselves, exposing a deeper level, and then that floor gets scoured away and another deeper level is revealed. Finally, people get down to the core wounds and the core loves."

For most of us, this scouring process is not something we go out and embrace. It's too painful.

Not to worry. Life has a way of thrusting us into this process whether we like it or not. The older you get, the more likely you are to experience devastating losses. It's the nature of things.

You don't have a choice about when or whether it will happen to you. But you do have a choice about how you will react to it, what you will learn from it, how you will grow from it, and how well you will be prepared for the next loss, and the next.

A Little Something is a chance to experience this process from a safe distance. It's a journey into the heart of grief with characters you will care about.

In these crucibles that I have constructed, in the interiors of Katherine and Sam, lives change, and change deeply, and the truth comes out.

Love comes out. Courage comes out.

After the dust settles, what remains in the scoured selves of these characters are the small things, the simple things, the enduring things. We must hang on to these things for dear life.

A small, quiet mystery. A little something. Praise for A Little SomethingA ten-year-old boy is struck in the face by a foul ball; from this freak accident a relentless chain of events unrolls. This brave and illuminating book focuses on his parents Sam and Kath (herself a physician to children) and medical personnel, but it also explores wider contexts of religion, bioethics, social justice, and the limits of medicine in desperate situations. Richard Haddaway has crafted a pitch-perfect range of characters emotions and memories, of scientific facts and obdurate mysteries, and of suspense and resolution. Albert Howard Carter, III, Ph.
