Inhaltsangabe: Helen Forrester's new novel is a moving and fascinating portrait of a small community and a time long past. Manuel Echaniz is a Basque. Now an old man, he is living in British Columbia, far from the city of his birth - Liverpool. This is the story of Manuel's childhood and coming-of-age in the teeming streets of Liverpool's docklands. Brought up by women while the men are at sea, Manuel grows up with a fierce pride in his heritage and a powerful will to survive in an era of deprivation. Against all odds, he gets himself an education of sorts, and sets off on the long voyage of his life that will lead to Canada.
Über den Autor: Helen Forrester was born in Hoylake, Cheshire, the eldest of seven children. For many years, until she married, her home was Liverpool, a city that features prominently in her work.
