Second Edition.Bound in a full-calf binding for Blackheath New Proprietary School, an educational establishment that had a profound influence on the game of football, helping to found The Football Association in 1863.This is a collection of biographies by Gilbert Burnet, which also includes an 'address to posterity' as well as the prefaces from the first Dublin edition.Contents include 'Life of Sir Matthew Hale', 'Life of John, Earl of Rochester', 'Character of Archbishop Leightoun', and 'Character of Queen Mary II'.Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715) was a Scottish philosopher, historian, and Bishop of Salisbury. Burnet was one of the few close friends that King William III confided in.Edited by John Jebb, who was an Irish churchman.Ink inscription to reverse of front endpaper which reads, ' Blackheath New Proprietary School Midsummer 1841, Lower Sixth Class Rayden Prize for Divinity'.Collated, complete. Bound in a full-calf binding. Externally, smart. A bit of wear to the extremities and the bottom edge of front board, as well as the spine. Light wear along the joints, with a few marks to boards, particularly the front board. Gilt illustration on front board is faded with a bit of rubbing. Prior owner's ink inscription to verso of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot throughout text to the fore edge of text. Very Good.
