First Major edition. Octavo, pp. xviii, 503, [1]. With the listed 52 woodcut embellishments designed by Walton, and 11 copper plate engravings as called for. In addition this copy is extra-illustrated with 132 copper and steel engravings. Bound in 19th century full crimson Morocco with double gilt fillet borders to boards and gilt dentelle rolls to inner boards; 5 raised spine bands with gilt spine titles; red marbled endpapers; t.e.g. Signed in gilt to inner board "Bound by Palmer Howe & Co Manchester". Housed in a matching crimson faux morocco covered slipcase. Re-cased, morocco lightly rubbed to corners, some light scattered foxing throughout. Overall a Very Good copy. Handsomely bound copy of Walton's Lives, and the the first printing to have been edited by John Major. All of the subjects were personal friends of Walton's.
