A smartly bound three volume biography of the famous North family. Complete in three volumes, with a frontispiece portrait of one of the men in question to each. Written by Roger North, an English lawyer and biographer who here details the lives of his three brothers, the most famous being Francis and Dudley North, both eminent political figures in the courts of Charles II and James II. Francis North, Baron Guilford, had been an noted lawyer and Justice of the Common Pleas before being appointed Lord Keeper of the Great Seal in 1683. He sat as a judge on some of the Popish Plot trials, where Titus Oates made fictitious allegations of an extensive Catholic plot to assassinate King Charles II, leading to the execution of at least 22 men. Francis North was accused of excessive credulity in bowing to the anti-Catholic hysteria of the day. Dudley North was an English Merchant, politician and notable economist, knighted in 1683 and elected member of parliament in 1685. He held various positions due to his success and experience in trade, including as commissioner of customs and later of the treasury. Finally, the Reverend Dr Roger North was a professor of Greek and master of Trinity College, Cambridge in the late seventeenth century. He also served as Clerk of the Closet to King Charles II. In full calf binding, with gilt tooling to the spines. Some rubbing to extremities, and loss of leather to spine tails. Minor marks to the boards, heaviest to the rear of volume II. Light tidemark to front board of volume III. Internally, firmly bound. Offsetting to title pages. Otherwise, pages are clean and bright. Very Good Indeed. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 776F13
