Stiff blue printed front wrapper, soiled, typical wear at edges and backstrip. Lacks back wrapper. 204, 48 pp., The maps, in the form of strip maps, show major and fairly minor roads, primarily in Arizona and New Mexico. Parts of southern California and west Texas (To Amarillo, El Paso, Lubbock, Midland) highlight the roads but not the surrounding country. They show distances between towns or necessary turns, as well as the locations of service stations and hotels. An interesting feature is that many of the maps include small photographs, often of hotels and garages, of landmarks along the route shown on the map. These provide a wonderful glimpse at 1920 America, illustrating many buildings which no longer stand and landscapes which are now unrecognizable. This is a great view of what was involved in taking a long trip at the beginning of the age of long-distance automobile travel. The copyright date is 1921 on the first page, but there is also a 1923 copyright date inside the front cover. This is among the earliest auto guidebooks for the Southwest. OCLC 259455514. The copy at the one location shown in OCLC, the DeGolyer Library, does not appear to thave the 48 page appendix which is included in this copy. This appendix likely accounts for the different copyright dates.
