First edition, first issue of Verdi's fourth opera, in fine contemporary binding. Piano-vocal score. Hopkinson 40A(a). Title-page (verso blank), [1-2 : Indice; Personaggi/Attori], 3-259 pp. Engraved. Oblong folio. Published by Giov. Ricordi, Milano, etc., 1843. Plate nos. 14531-14555. Beautifully bound in full red leather, with large gilt ornaments to upper and lower boards and on spine, within double borders, plus dentellles. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Ornament to upper cover includes the initials "m n" -- perhaps a Spaniard, since a blind-stamp (timbro a secco) on the title-page is of a music store in Madrid, and the binder's name at the tail of the spine ("Ginesta") is a name still familiar to book publishing in the same city. -- A very handsome volume, showing only minor wear to the covers, and with all printed pages in immaculate condition. -- I Lombardi is one of the 3 early operas of Verdi (together with Nabucco and Ernani) that has retained a place in the repertory of major opera houses almost continuously since its first performance at the Teatro alla Scala, Milano, 11 February 1843. -- This first printing of the music score was apparently very short-lived, since Hopkinson located only 6 copies in Europe, and found that Verdi's own copy in his home at Sant'Agata was of the second printing [Hopk. 40A(b)]. Size: Oblong Folio. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 002415
