"William Nicholson, with his brother-in-law James Pryde, produced posters that were a revelation to late 19th-century London. Nicholson went on to adapt his dramatic woodblock style to book illustration, publishing a series of highly successful works (the best known being An Alphabet; London Types; An Almanac of Twelve Sports) before turning to painting full-time with the encouragement of J.McN. Whistler. In the present work, in a striking series of images, Nicholson deftly captures the individual character of fin-de-siecle London 'types.' His selection starts with the bus driver on the cover, and continues inside with the guardsman, the hawker, the beef- eater, the sandwich-man, the coster, the lady, the bluecoat boy, the policeman, the news-boy, the drum-major, the flower girl and the, barmaid. CONDITION of book & plates: some rubbing at the edges of some of the plates; lots of rubbing and marks to the front & back boards; most of the spine is gone and has tears, otherwise interior plates in VERY GOOD COND.
