Beschreibung
Longfellows and Edward Everett Hale. The Longfellow family is represented by five items from the famous poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, his brother Samuel, and their father Stephen. There is also a letter from Edward Everett Hale to Samuel referencing a noted artist. 1) Henry Wadsworth Longfellow author, 4.5 x 2 slip of paper signed Yours truly Henry W. Longfellow . There is soiling and a couple of stains with remnants of mounting on the back but still an attractive example of his signature. This appears to be cut paper Longfellow used for autographing rather than being cut from a letter. 2) Stephen Longfellow father of Henry and Samuel. Lengthy one page folio legal document regarding a land transfer, written and signed by Longfellow. The father practiced law in Portland Maine (then Massachusetts) and was active in Politics. He served in the Massachusetts State Legislature and later was a Federalist member of Congress representing Maine for a single term. (Some early separation at fold lines along the edges.) 3) Samuel Longfellow was a prominent Unitarian Minister, writer of many hymns and an author, including a biography of his older brother. He is represented with two handwritten notes signed inviting Howard Corning to dinners. There is also a nice cabinet photo from a studio in Maine signed and dated on the back by Samuel. (Folds and staining at top margin on one letter) 4) Edward Everett Hale is best known as the author of The Man Without a Country but he was also a Unitarian Minister. Hale would have been part of the Longfellow family orbit through his writing and the fireside authors as well as Samuel through the early growth of Unitarianism in New England which helped lead the cause of abolition. Hale s letter to Samuel is dated 1882. He thanks him for a subscription and conveys Mrs. Merritt s regret that she was not able to paint Samuel s portrait due to his illness. Mrs. Merritt was almost certainly Anna Lea Merritt an American born artist who spent most of her life in England but often visited the states. Nice three way association letter connecting three prominent people and Six pieces in total a nice collection of Longfellow family material. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-1595167044477
