Paperback. From the volcanic plateaus of central Mexico to the cloud-wrapped peaks of the Andes, the civilizations of the Aztec, Maya, and Inca built worlds where myth was not metaphor but structure. Lords of Time and Stone explores these mythic worlds with clarity, reverence, and depth, revealing how story, ritual, and cosmology shaped the lives of millions across centuries. Edited by Alder Stonefield, this volume brings together sweeping essays that illuminate the sacred landscapes, divine figures, and cosmic rhythms that animated three of the most sophisticated civilizations in the ancient Americas. The book opens with the elemental forces of creation-sun, moon, serpent, and mountain-and traces how each culture imagined the origins of time, humanity, and the world itself. It explores the Aztec cycles of destruction and renewal, the Maya's intricate celestial calendars and divine kingship, and the Inca's living landscape of apu spirits, sacred roads, and ancestral mountains. Through richly detailed chapters, readers encounter gods who walk the earth, ancestors who dwell in stone, and rituals that bind the human and divine in acts of reciprocity and care.Rather than treating myth as static folklore, Lords of Time and Stone presents it as a living system of meaning-one that shaped governance, agriculture, architecture, and ethics. The essays delve into the ceque system of sacred geography, the lunar order of Mama Quilla, the underworld of Ukhu Pacha, and the principle of ayni, reciprocity as cosmic law. They reveal how myth structured the rhythm of the year, guided pilgrimage, and justified empire. The final chapters turn toward the present, showing how these traditions endure in contemporary Indigenous life, not as relics but as resilient frameworks for identity, resistance, and renewal.Throughout, the volume honors the distinctiveness of each tradition while drawing out resonances across cultures. It is not a comparative study in the conventional sense, but a constellation of voices and visions that speak across valleys and centuries. The writing is spacious, poetic, and grounded in scholarship, making it suitable for educators, students, and general readers alike. With its luminous prose and careful attention to cosmological nuance, Lords of Time and Stone invites readers into a world where time is cyclical, the earth is alive, and myth is the architecture of reality. It is a book for those who seek to understand not only what these civilizations believed, but how they lived, remembered, and imagined their place in the cosmos. This item is printed on demand.
