In medieval England the archbishop of Canterbury was not only the most important spiritual peer, but also the lord of a huge estate scattered over south-east England. In this study Du Boulay traces the building up of this estate before the Norman Conquest and analyses its development during the five centuries between the Conquest and Cranmer's surrender of church lands to Henry VIII. Includes appendices, Knights' fees held of the Archbishop of Canterbury and Lists of some office-holders in the Archbishop's temporal administration to c. 1540.
