The New York edition issued by Harper & Brothers reflects the close transatlantic exchange of cartographic publishing during the middle decades of the nineteenth century, bringing British geographical engraving of the highest standard to an American audience.The atlas presents a picture of the world in the years immediately preceding the Crimean War, recording a period of rapid territorial expansion, imperial administration, and scientific exploration. The maps depict the political geography of Europe following the Congress of Vienna, the growing influence of the British Empire in India and Australasia, the expanding settlement of North America, and the still only partially explored interior of Africa. Joseph Wilson Lowry belonged to one of England's foremost engraving families. The son of the engraver Wilson Lowry and the scientific illustrator Rebecca Lowry, he developed a distinguished career producing maps and technical illustrations for publishers including Chapman & Hall, the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, and numerous scientific institutions.
