Complete in four volumes.'The Lucubrations of Isaac Bickerstaff' is the essays written for the magazine 'Tatler'.'The Tatler' was a society and literary journal founded in 1709 by Richard Steele, using Jonathan Swift's pseudonym 'Isaac Bickerstaff'. The journal was published for two years, originally with three issues published a week. The original collected edition was published in 1710-11, before the journal was liquidated. Jonathan Swift occasionally contributed to 'Tatler', though Steele originally used the name to boost sales for his journal.Richard Steele was an Irish politician and playwright, and Joseph Addison was likewise an essayist, politician and playwright.Addison and Steele founded several publications during their friendship, including the daily publication 'The Spectator', which ran from 1711 to 1712. Steele also founded the short lived "The Guardian". None of these publications are related to the modern day ones which share their same names.Bookplate of Edward Witts to the front paste downs, bookplate of Edward Francis Witts to the rear paste down. In a full calf binding. Externally, rubbed. A small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spines. Joints and hinges are a little strained. Minor bumping to the extremities. Loss of leather to the rear joint of Volume I, a smaller amount of loss to the rear joint of Volume IV. Leather to the rear joint of Volume II and the joints of Volume III is lifting. Bookplate to the paste downs. Ink inscription to the verso of the front endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean with the occasional scattered spot.
