A new edition, based on the original manuscripts salvaged from Leipzig after the Second World War, published in French. Alongside details of his complicated and elaborate affairs with women, the Italian adventurer discusses his brief careers as a clergyman and musician, his attempts at professional gambling, and his imprisonment. Candid about his faults and intentions, as well as his wins and losses, this entertaining set also provides insights into the customs and norms of European life during the eighteenth century. Undated. Dated using World Cat from a copy held at the university of Oxford. This set is lacking the first volume. In a full maroon cloth binding. Externally, generally, smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, a little more so to the joints. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with tiny tear in the cloth at the rear joint of volume IV near the tail of the spine. There is a a centimetre-long tear to the front front joint of volume II near the head of the spine, and to the rear joint of volume V near the tail of the spine. All volumes are rather bumped and a little worn at the extremities. The rear hinge is starting, but firm to volume II, and both hinges are starting, but firm to volumes IV and V.
