Wrappers lightly soiled, thumb-sized dampstain to bottom corner, a smaller one at upper left, minor pencil underlining on three pages, corners square and flat, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. John Humphrey Noyes (1811-1886) was an American preacher, radical religious philosopher, and utopian socialist. He founded the Putney, Oneida, and Wallingford Communities, and is credited with coining the term "complex marriage". Noyes advocated male continence, or the interrupting of sexual intercourse before ejaculation, as a means to avoid unwanted pregnancy that would be injurious to the health of the woman. He claimed that by separating the amative from the procreative aspects of intercourse, the spiritual nature of the union between a man and woman would be exalted.
