Jeremy Farrar is a leading global health expert, serving as the Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization since May 2023. He oversees WHO’s science division, uniting experts worldwide to promote evidence-based policies and equitable access to health innovations.
Prior to WHO, Farrar was the Director of the Wellcome Trust from 2013 to 2023, where he led major reforms and focused on global challenges such as climate and health, infectious diseases, and mental health, emphasizing diversity and inclusion. Before that, he spent over 17 years as the Director of the Clinical Research Unit at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Vietnam, specializing in infectious diseases like influenza, HIV, dengue, and antimicrobial resistance.
A trained neurologist and infectious disease specialist, he holds a PhD in Immunology from Oxford, developed with UCSF. Farrar has published over 600 articles and received numerous honors, including knighthood in 2018, the President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Humanitarian Award, and the Order of the Rising Sun from Japan.
In his WHO role, he leads efforts on disease prevention, health promotion, and addressing the health impacts of climate change and migration.
