He graduated at Yale in 1840. In 1841 he was appointed professor of mathematics in the Navy, and a year later succeded to the chair of mathematics at the naval in Philadelphia. He was very active in the movement that led to the establishment of the U.S naval academy at Annapolis. At first he was professor of mathematics and astronomy there, and later of astronomy, navigation, and surveying, and always the most prominent of the academic staff. In 1855, he was offered the professorship of mathematics, and in 1859 that of astronomy and natural philosophy at Yale, but both honors were declined. During the same year, he was elected to the chair of mathematics in Washington University, st louis, and in 1862, he was chosen chancellor of the university. This book is a detailed treatise combining contemporary European advancements along with new American methods using electric telegraph and the zenith telescope. Chauvenet has included his own method for reducing lunar distances, first published in the American ephemeris in 1855 along with the tables for its application. Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate world of astronomical instruments, providing a comprehensive guide to their theory and practical applications. The author, writing in a period when astronomical observation was undergoing significant advancements, meticulously explores the tools that enabled astronomers to chart the heavens with ever-increasing precision. From magnifying power to angle measurement, the book meticulously examines the principles behind these instruments, dissecting their individual components and their collaborative role in achieving accurate observations. The author's deep understanding of optics and mechanics shines through as they guide readers through the complexities of lenses, mirrors, and graduated circles, explaining concepts like spherical and chromatic aberration, and the function of the vernier scale. The book goes beyond mere descriptions, however, illuminating the subtle interplay between instrument design and the very nature of observation itself. The author grapples with issues like the impact of refraction on readings, the inherent imperfections of instruments, and the need to account for personal bias in recording data. In a testament to the importance of these insights, the author delves into the method of least squares, a statistical tool used to refine astronomical observations and minimize the impact of errors. Ultimately, this book offers not just a practical guide to using astronomical instruments, but a compelling examination of the scientific and philosophical considerations that shaped the development of this critical field. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
