1863 MANUSCRIPT RECIPE BOOK OF ROSETTA FRANCES PADWICK (?) OF THE MANOR HOUSE, HAYLING ISLAND Quarto, 93p + blanks, comprising over 275 recipes, mainly cookery but also medicinal. Including West Indian Blane Mange, Pigeons in jelly, Damson Cheese, Orange Wine, Fairy butter, English Champagne, Pike, Coltsfoot Syrup, Preserving melon, Stilton cheese, Black pudding, Lobster pudding, and much else. The medicinal recipes at the end include remedies for sore nipples, piles, rosemary pomatum for thickening the hair, infusion of roses for a sore throat, almond wash balls, and much else. Provenance : Almost certainly compiled by Rosetta Frances Padwick of the Manor House, Hayling Island. Daughter of William Padwick and Grace Taylor (m.1814.) The Padwick family material was auctioned in 2025 and other manuscript material (not here) strongly suggests that this recipe book is in the hand of Rosetta Padwick. ***** William Padwick, sometimes known as William Padwick the younger, was a lawyer and significant figure in the development of Hayling Island mid-nineteenth century. In 1814 he married Grace Taylor, daughter of Admiral Wiliam Taylor. In 1825 he bought South Hayling Manor from the 12th Duke of Norfolk. This also included Manor Farm, Sinah Farm and South Common. As Lord of the Manor this came with various royalties, tithes, ferry rights and mud rights, and was noted for enforcement particular in respect of the Oyster fisheries. Famed for his desire to develop and promote Hayling Island as a tourist destination, his aspirations led to early development of West Town. He engaged a London architect to develop 'Beachlands' with the 'Norfolk Hotel', a crescent, bath house and horse racing track.[6] The golf course on Sinah Commo was another amenity he created. He was also heavily involved in the failed attempt to run a railway over mud flats in Langstone Harbour, creating wet and dry docks at Sinah Lake. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 028676
