Title, 102-110pp. Folio. Printed upper wrapper, with text beginning on verso. Text in double columns, illustrations in color. Upper wrapper and 1st page of text printed on a sheet of acidic paper, so with some small chips, tears and signs of having been reattached; however, the internals are very good. An offprint from FORTUNE magazine, published coincident with the exhibition of all sixty panels from Lawrence's groundbreaking series at the Downtown Gallery in New York. Included are an unsigned, substantial introductory text, a photo of the 24 year old artist, and reproductions in color of 26 of the panels, with Lawrence's captions. The Smithsonian's copy is accompanied by the assertion that "the Fortune article was the first time a mainstream magazine published the work of an African American artist . the publicity marked a turning point in his career."
