Titel: LES MISERABLES
Verlag: W. I. Pooley & Co.; Hurst & Blackett; Pagnerre, New York; London; Paris
No date. Brown textured cloth with blind-stamped borders over boards. Gilt spine lettering. 467 pages after preliminaries. Frontispiece portrait of author. Yellow endpapers. Two-column format. Very likely the first one-volume edition. Printer given as " John A. Gray, Printer, Stereotyper, and Binder, Cor. Frankfort and Jacob Sts., Fire-Proof Buildings." I have seen this advertised with circa 1862 given as the date, and that might be about right, as the front free endpaper bears in faded ink the name of Mary Prendergast, dated 1863. First and last few leaves are moderately foxed, with light to moderate foxing throughout. Pages are tightly bound and otherwise clean. Edges a bit age-darkened. Several small spots and general scuffing to covers, with moderate wear to corners and lower spine, and heavy wear to head of spine, with some loss of fabric and underlying material. Front hinge is weak, but neither is torn. What puts this into the "Local History" category is, of course, the name Mary Prendergast, with the Prendergast family being extremely important to the earliest history of Chautauqua County and Jamestown.
