ND (1949) 1st edition. Large 4to (218 x 285mm). Ppii,222. B/w photographs, pedigrees, introduction by Captain A.E. Brice. Blind-stamped ruled border, gilt greyhound motif to green cloth. Cloth worn and stained, head of spine frayed, large owner's inscription to end-papers, browning to edges and preliminaries. Good reading copy, lacks dust-wrapper. This is an "interesting and well-written book .The history of coursing and [greyhound] racing over the past twenty years - both in this country and in Ireland - is carefully traced, and for the first time both sports are brought together and dealt with exhaustively as complementary phases of the breed's unique gift of speed and stamina. Particularly interesting features are the family charts which afford easy-at-a-glance reference to the breeding of all the winners of major coursing and track events of the past twenty-five years". (The tables in the book run from 1924 to 1948). The introduction is by Captain A.E. Brice who was the Director of Racing at Wembley Stadium at the time of publication. The British Museum General Catalogue of Printed Books confirms the date of publication as 1949. Chapters include; the appeal of the greyhound; the evolution of the track greyhound; the Irish invasion; Mutton Cutlet; Glorious Event; Red Robin; Inler; white Collar; Creamery Border; matrons of the leash - Burletta, S.O.S., Famous Flight, Grille; principles of scientific breeding; the paddock parade; the qualities of a good greyhound; thumbnail sketches of the stars - Tanist, Lights o' London, Swinging Light, Train, Ballynennan Moon, Disputed Rattler, Model Dasher, Ballyhennessy Seal, Monday's News, the shape of things to come.
