Extremities a little worn but otherwise a good copy. Small armourial bookplate of Mr. Francis Bland on verso of first free endpaper. Illustrated by a coloured folding map, Baynes, Map of the Environs of Gravesend, 'expressly for the Month at Gravesend,' although not called for in the contents pages, with 15 steel engraved plates, including frontispiece and decorated by title page and tailpiece vignettes. The called for plate of Banqueting Hall, Rosherville, p.78 is not present but instead an additional plate, not called for in this edition, Entrance to Huggins College, as present in the first edition of 1863, has been added, p.88. This copy has also been extra illustrated with the addition of four plates: A View of Gravesend from the river tipped on to recto of frontispiece and 3 views of Rosherville Gardens, comprising two engravings and a woodcut and accompanying text from a newspaper or journal, all paste on card and loosely inserted at p. 79. A printed slip, Restoration of the Ancient Church of St. Mary, Bexley, has been tipped in on the verso of the final advertisement page. An account of a month spent in exploring Gravesend and its neighbourhood condensed into ten days of descriptive text in order to remedy the want of ' A Good Modern Guide Book.' Written in a more literary style than the average guide, this account is the work of an established author: 'oppressed by the sultry heat of a London Autumn' and feeling rather overworked by severe study in the British Museum Reading Room, 'felt that irresistible desire for country air and country quiet' and hence 'made an escapade to Gravesend.' At the end is an account of the arrival at Gravesend of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who married Edward Prince of Wales in 1863, the year of publication of the first edition. A good copy of the expanded second edition of this rare and charming guide, which is particularly well illustrated with highly finished steel engravings.
