An extensively updated and revised version of a renowned book, this third edition draws on documentation only recently made available in the West. This authoritative revision begins with the arrival of the Slavs in the sixth century, and ends with Gorbachev, the demise of communism, and an outline of the Yeltsin years. Greater attention has been paid to developments in Russian provinces which in previous histories are largely ignored, and a history of Russian arts and cultural life generally is also more thoroughly covered, making this an essential new edition.
LIONEL KOCHAN has lectured in modern history at the universities of Edinburgh and East Anglia, and is now appointed to the Bearsted Readership in Jewish History at the University of Warwick. He has written extensively on Russian and Jewish history.
JOHN KEEP was Professor of Russian History at the University of Toronto, Canada, from 1970 until his retirement in 1988. His many works include Last of the Empires: A History of the Soviet Union, 1945-91. He now lives in Switzerland.
