Beschreibung

This is the finely bound, limited and numbered subscriber’s edition, copy #148 of 500. The binding is half green leather over green cloth boards with raised spine bands, leather corners, double blind rules at spine bands and transitions, gilt stamped antelope head on the spine, gilt stamped zebra head on the front cover, all page edges gilt, and endpapers illustrated with a menagerie of South African fauna and flora. The limitation page is ink-stamped "148" with the autograph signature of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of "The Mammals of South Africa" Book Fund. Laid in is a compliments card of the Trustees of "The Mammals of South Africa" Book Fund, also ink-stamped "118" and requesting acknowledgement of safe receipt of the volume. This is the final publication of Dr. Austin Roberts (1883-1948), following The Birds of South Africa. Roberts was a South African zoologist employed for 36 years by the Transvaal Museum, where he amassed a huge collection of bird and mammal specimens. The Mammals of South Africa was published from the original manuscript of Dr. Austin Roberts after his death, with the correction of minor errors done by an Editorial Sub-committee, which included Dr. V. FitzSimons, the well-known herpetologist. With a foreword by Lt.-Col. J. Stevenson-Hamilton, noted wildlife conservationist. Seven hundred pages, profusely illustrated with 24 vibrant color plates and 54 photographic plates, as well as 138 measurement tables, maps, and index. Condition approaches very good overall. The contents are clean and bright, with no spotting or inscriptions. All plates are present. We note some tenderness at the front hinge, though the binding remains tight and uncompromised. The binding is square and clean, and unfaded, showing wear to spine ends, corners, and hinges. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 003964
