Buchbeschreibung The Outlook Company, New York, 1902. Hardcover. Buchzustand: Good. 8vo. 97 pages. Bound in stiff full vellum with yapped edges and red silk ties. The ties at the fore edge are torn away and incomplete. The binding is soiled from handling, especially around the edges. The spine is a bit dulled. The binding is quite sound, and the inner hinges are secure. SIGNED by the author on the special limitation page. This is #50 of 80 of a special limited edition. A total of 2080 were printed. 2000 were in cloth and only 80 were bound in full vellum. Quite scarce. ~~ "Man Without a Country" was first published in magazine form in 1863 as a means of building a sense of patriotic appreciation during the Civil War. It's main character, Philip Nolan, is a contemporary of Aaron Burr who was tried for treason. The fictional Nolan character was also tried, and he declared that he wished never to see or hear of the United States again. The judge granted his wish and banished him to be detained on the high seas on American steamers for the rest of his life, with orders that no one ever gives him news of his country again. At first he is fine with this, but over the years he becomes more despondent, seeing that a person's need for country is as strong as their need for family. At the end of his life it was discovered that he had built a shrine for the country that he loved after all. He was never able to see or hear of again until his deathbed when one friend broke the silence and spoke of the country's progress over the ensuing 50+ years. Signed by Author(s).
