The second volume of Sound and Symbol: volume one published in 1956 under title Sound and Symbol: music and the external world. - Man without music would not be complete as man, nor would a world without music be fully our world. In this second volume of Victor Zuckerkandl s philosophy of music, the author shows particular insight in dealing with the phenomenon of musicality as an inherently human trait, rather than a distinguishing characteristic limited to a chosen few. He goes on to analyze at length the ways in which we perceive music, examining the processes involved in our sensitivity to tone, dynamic tone qualities, musical movement, and the structure of whole musical works. In discussing the various existing theories about listening, including Gestalt psychology, he concludes that they fail to do justice to the complex acts and activities that comprise musical perception: a new conceptual framework will have to be developed. 9780691099255 ISBN 0691099251.
