Inhaltsangabe:

Mandirs represent the devotional heart of Hinduism. Their development over millennia from simple thatched huts to ornate, majestic stone monuments symbolizes Hindus' ever-flourishing faith in God. Since antiquity, these sacred structures have continuously expressed the spiritual aspirations of the Hindu mind, visibly revealing Hindu faith. Despite this, the complex history, symbolism and forms of mandirs have often remained mysterious to the casual viewer. This book attempts to demystify the meanings and forms of the Hindu mandir. By charting the meanings of the mandir's symbolic visual form, as well its spiritual function, this book provides a framework for understanding how mandirs have developed throughout history. Every aspect of the mandir's form is linked to God and functions to enhance the devotees' experience of and faith in the Divine. Mandirs: Faith, Form, Function reveals how faith gave rise to the mandir's elaborate forms, which in turn has enabled functions that reinforce faith enabling countless souls to realize the Divine. With over 250 exquisite full-color photographs, diagrams and illustrations on glossy art paper, this thoroughly-researched book is as much a work of art as the mandirs that it seeks to help us better understand.
