Nice copy in publisher's wholly unrestored period binding, enhanced by Thomson's inimitable illustrations. One of the great book illustrators of the period, Thomson completed all six Austen novels at the height of his powers. First published in the previous year. With a sketch of a gent with spectacles, inscribed "to John Thomas Mackey with kind regards Hugh Thomson 1897." Laid in is a two-page letter from Thomson to Mackey, "I send the two copies into which you asked me to write. Having an innocent moment I added a couple of thumbnail sketches - a quite remarkable energetic action on my part. Thank you very much for the copies sent me. I will return the plain backs the first time I call. With every good wish for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Yours Sincerely Hugh Thomson I signed the sketch in the young lady's book & there remains lots of room for your signature".
