Small restored wall map, with original rods. Varnish removed, modern linen. Small areas of facsimile, the largest of which is near Brattleboro, Vermont. Full color by county. A very rare map of lower New England by an otherwise unknown maker. The best lead for pinning down the origins of this map is the name of the engraver, J. G. Darby. Darby appears to have been a somewhat itinerant engraver, with several pieces published in Buffalo, including an apparent association with Oliver Steele, a leading Buffalo publisher of the day. He also engraved Lewis Robinson's Map of the United States in 1836. In 1849 he engraved a map of Detroit published there, while in 1851 his name appears on a map of Iowa published in Dubuque. This map of New England resembles other maps of the area published in Hartford, but there is no other indication that it was printed there. The Connecticut Historical Society has this to say about Lemuel Bingham: "Little is known of Lemuel Bingham, who appears as the publisher of maps of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, published in the 1840s. At least two different individuals named Lemuel Bingham lived during this time period and it is not obvious which, if either, of these men published the map."
