Beschreibung

EDMISTON, Althea Brown. Maria Fearing: A Mother to African Girls. Atlanta, GA: Committee on Woman's Work, 1938. 1st separate ed. 32 pp. Illus. Orig. pictorial wrappers. Mild soiling to wrappers, else a very good copy. Extremely rare. OCLC locates only 2 copies. First printed in the previous year as a chapter in Glorious Living, Informal Sketches of Seven Women Missionaries of the Presbyterian Church, U.S. Fearing was born a slave in Gainsville, Alabama, in 1833. In 1871, aged 33, she entered the Freedman's Bureau school in Talladega (now Talladega College). After completing a 9th grade education, she became a teacher in a rural school and purchased a home in Annisaton. In 1894, at the age 0f 56, she volunteered to become a Presbyterian missionary in Africa. Paying her own way, she sailed to the Congo and travelled 1,200 miles up the Congo River to the Luebo mission. There she learned the native language and established the Pantops Home for Girls, where she cared for orphans and runaway slaves. Aside from a fundrasing trip to the U.S. in 1905, Fearing remained in Africa until 1915. Afterwards, she taught at a church school in Selma for a time. She died in 1937 at the age of 88.
