This three volume set of first editions was inscribed to John Whitcomb Riley from the author. The inscription is located on the front paste-down of volume one and reads as follows: "To John Whitcomb Riley, Whose place in the heart of the world is by the side of Mark Twain's. From {author's signature}Sept 25 / 12". First editions noted on copyright pages as follows: Volume 1 "pub Sept 1912 + H-M", Volume 2 " I - M" and volume 3 " I - M". These three volumes have been bound in a bright red cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on the spines - gilt decoration center of front covers, back covers plain. Spine sections of the covers have darkened from time. Bottom edges of the text are rough-cut, upper edges gilt. Some light corner bumping, edge wear. All three volumes have John Whitcomb Riley's book plate. Portrait frontispiece retains tissue protective sheet. Numerous illustrations in all three volumes, black and white photos as well as drawings. Text is very clean and solid in bindings.
