Here is the scarce Canadian issue of Volume I, the first and only printing. Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The first edition of Marlborough was originally issued in four volumes between 1933 and 1938. It was very well received - both critically and aesthetically. Canadian editions of the first three volumes were published by Ryerson Press and are considerably more scarce than their British counterparts. These Canadian editions were bound in a dark purple cloth distinctly different than the plum cloth of the British first edition and without the British edition's bevelled edges. Apart from the title page, the contents are the same, with a profusion of illustrations, maps, plans, and facsimile documents, but without the gilt top edge. The Canadian dust jackets were similar to the British, but with "Ryerson Press" on the jacket spines instead of "Harrap" and no publisher's price on the front flap. This copy of the scarce Canadian edition of Volume I is very good in a good dust jacket. The dark purple binding of the Canadian edition proved just as vulnerable to sunning as the plum cloth of the British edition. Here the binding is square and clean with sharp corners, but sunned corresponding with dust jacket losses at the spine ends, as well as at the corners and extreme edges. There is also a single, tiny hole at the upper front hinge. The contents are clean and bright. No spotting. The only previous ownership mark is a contemporary name dated 1933 - in pencil - on the ffep. The text block fore and bottom edges are clean and slightly age-toned. The top edge is dust soiled. The scarce dust jacket is substantially complete, but certainly shows age and flaws. There is a 3 inch wide by .25 inch deep strip loss across the spine head, trivial chipping at the spine tail, two tiny holes at the upper front hinge, and a thin strip of loss at the front flap fold. The spine is toned with wear at the hinges and some staining to the blank rear face. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.
