Beschreibung
In Hebrew. 532 pages. 13.25 x 10 inches. Masekhet Nida; Seder Taharot [Talmud Bavli]. Great blind tooled leather binding, probably the original one. It still has two of the very detailed decorative corner brass metal plates and portions of the two clasps. All edges gilt and gauffered. Signature of previous owners on front blank, one of them dated with the Hebrew calendar year that is equivalent to 1802 C.E. This is only A PART of the entire Talmud. Very wide margins, excellent paper. Vinograd 381 + 390. On the first, second and last leaves, and a few interior leaves, is a purple ink impression of a rubber stamp: M. ARNSTEIN STAMPFEN. Stampfen is the German name for the town known as Stupava in Slovak and as Stomfa in Hungarian. It is located c. 15 kilometers from Bratislava. This volume was found in the nearby town of Dunaszerdahely (Dunajska Streda) after World War II. This volume weighs approximately 8 pounds without packaging, so shipping this to a destination outside the U.S. would be costly. Additional scans available upon request. Since the pages of this folio are much larger than the platen of my scanner, the scans do not show the entire pages. The reason this book, owned by a resident of Stupava, was found after the war in Dunaszerdahely is that all the Jews in the villages and towns around Duznazerdahely was transported to the tiny Dunaszerdahely ghetto. They brought with them the things most precious to them. When they were packed into cattle cars and then shipped to Auschwitz, some of their belongings were left behind in the soon to be destroyed synagogue. Some of the items, including this volume, were picked up by Christians after the Jews were sent to their death. Some items were still held by locals years later, others found their way to thrift shops and antiques stores. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 005045
