Inhaltsangabe: What is in question here is the way bodies, views and sounds cross thesholds in dwellings in the cities of the Arabian Orient - Cairo, Damascus, Aleppo, Sanaa - ; the way everyday life defines territories, controls their limits, negotiates passage; the way these things take support or are blocked by spaces, the places that are taken over, neutralized or sidetracked. Doors, windows, balconies, gestures, movements, regards and words too... This book deals with the arts of doing, with thresholds and ritualizations, but also with the construction solutions that they elicit. It pays careful attention to language in particular: to the way ordinary names and expressions, including proverbs and literature - from Adonis to Ghassan Zaqtan including Naguib Mahfouz and Mahmoud Darwich tell us what passes through the wall .
About the Author: Jean-Charles Depaule (1945) lectured at the Ecole d architecture de Versailles before joining the CNRS to do research in urban anthropology on living spaces of the Arabian Orient. He is also a poet and a translator.
