A draft screenplay for The Matrix, the working copy of co-director Lily Wachowski, with a couple of ink annotations and post-it notes affixed to the fore-edges. This copy is dated 3 June 1997 - nearly one year before principal photography began. The text structurally resembles the final shooting script, but has a few differences in the dialogue, including a version of Neo's ending voiceover which is significantly different from the final shooting script and film. There are also a number of alternate scene transitions, suggesting the visual language of the film was highly intentional, and given close attention in the writing process. For example, this early version of the transition from the payphone scene into Neo's room, "The DARKNESS BEGINS TO RIPPLE WITH BRIGHT FLASHES OF BONE WHITE as we PULL OUT of the eye of a skull. It is a computer screen saver; the Jolly Roger flutters against an electronic wind." There are, of course, many differences between the script and the final film. Most amusingly, the film drops explicit references to Baudrillard in the first "construct" scene. This copy is missing pages 94 - 119, likely as used by Lily Wachowski. Quarto (280 x 215 mm). 112 xerox leaves on white paper, printed on rectos only. Original blue separate wrappers, bound with two brass brads.
