Besides being one of the major English poets of the nineteenth century, Matthew Arnold was a social critic and essayist of considerable eminence. There was hardly any topic that he did not turn his mind upon. In "Literature and Dogma", Arnold investigated the Bible, with the intent of making a clearer path to understanding Christian dogma, a it was exhibited both in the New and Old Testaments. Rejecting supernatural elements in Christianity, Arnold looked more to its impact as divine poetry, reflecting mankind's efforts to comprehend ideas such as God, prophesy, and salvation, and how comprehending the writings in the Bible may contribute to the betterment of individuals and society. ********************************* SERIES : TITLE : Literature & Dogma, An Essay Towards a Better Apprehension of the Bible. / AUTHOR : Matthew Arnold (1822 - 1888) / IMPRINT : Macmillan and Co. / PLACE : New York. / DATE : 1895. / EDITION : Reprint.
