Loosing someone is hard, at any age. For a child, it can be even more difficult if they don’t understand that it is okay to feel sad, and that through sharing stories and remembering those we love, we find comfort in the love and support we create together.

Till We Meet Again, provides comfort by helping caregivers talk to children about the loss of their loved one. There are points throughout the book to pause, and explore what the child is thinking or wants to remember about their loved one.

There are points throughout the book that encourage the following:

• Telling Stores: The page “It’s okay to feel sad, that is when you should remember all the fun we had” is a great place to stop and ask them to share the stories they remember. Encouraging them to share stories now, or as they remember them in the future can be a great way to give them comfort, to know that it is good to remember and that you want them to share the stories they have. You can also share your own stories with them. Together, you can make each others’ hearts glow.
• Remembering the things they did best: The page “Now I need something from you my dear, its the best way to keep me near”, provides the opportunity to remember all the things they were great at. Did they love cars, were they a great cook, did they love gardening, art, or taking care of animals? These are action items that, together, you can do too.
• A New Kind of Love: The page “Now you’ll feel my warm embrace when the wind moves your hair, or the sun kisses your face” and talk about how they might experience their love now. Sometimes this might be through a dream or a scent in the air. All of which can be shared and cherished together.
• White hummingbird: When the spirit is introduced in this story, so is the white hummingbird. I used it to symbolize the spirit as it moves through this time of transition, staying near the child to provide comfort and guidance. At the end of this story the hummingbird is in full colour, representing the completion of the spirits message, and encouragement for the child to carry on.

We worked together to design and illustrate the pictures using silhouettes for the characters, so that any child could picture themselves in this book.
