Vol. II is designated 15th edn on titlepage (also 1825), vols III & IV each with well-executed facsim. titlepage. Sl. later 19thC half black calf, spines lettered & attractively blocked in gilt. Notwithstanding replacement titlepages, a nice attractive set. An attractive copy of this many-times reprinted scandalous memoir. Bound at the end of vol. IV is a 58pp Trial for Libel, Blore v. Stockdale, at the King's Bench, 1825. The autobiography of the celebrated courtesan, Harriette Wilson, whose career encompassed the affections of the Duke of Wellington, the Marquess of Worcester, the Duke of Argyll, and Lord Melbourne's son, the Honourable Frederick Lamb. Her memoirs were published in a 'desperate effort to live by my wits' as her popularity, and income, dwindled with age. Faced with the publication of intimate affairs, Harriette hoped that this threat would encourage her lovers to support her financially. Famously, the Duke of Wellington responded to such blackmail with the line 'publish and be damned'. She needn't have worried however, as the Victorian public greedily purchased her tales of aristocratic hanky-panky. Her memoirs are still in print today. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 96322
