The series was started by British publisher Henry Vizetelly to showcase the talented playwrights of the Elizabethan, Jacobean and Restoration drama eras. The series was later taken over by the 'T. Fisher Unwin' publishing company.This set includes;Volumes I and II of 'Philip Massinger', 'Thomas Otway', Volume I, II and III of 'Ben Jonson', 'Thomas Heywood', 'Richard Steele', 'Thomas Middleton' Volume I and II, 'John Ford', 'William Wycherley', 'Shirley', 'Sir John Vanbrugh', 'Thomas Dekker', 'Nero and Other Plays', 'Webster and Tourneur', 'Beaumont and Fletcher Volume II', 'George Chapman' and 'William Congreve'. All works complete in themselves with the exception of Beaumont and Fletcher which is lacking Volume I. In the publisher's original cloths. Externally smart with bumping and slight rubbing to the extremities, fading to the spines to the majority of the volumes, the occasional very small closed tear to the head and tail of the spine, slight handling marks to the boards and rubbing to the rear board to 'Richard Steele'. Hinges starting to 'Beaumont, Massinger, Jonson' and weak to the rear to 'Jonson', held on by cords only. Booksellers stamp to the front pastedown to 'Beaumont' , rubbing to the front free endpaper to 'Vanbrugh' and damp staining to the endpapers to 'Otway'. Internally firmly with lightly age toned pages with occasional spotting, heaviest to the front and rears. Ex lib stamps to the front few pages to 'Vanbrugh'. Good.
