My story is an extreme example of the problems confronting all of us. After more than a decade of chronic symptoms including pain, digestive issues, food intolerances, brain fog, depression, anxiety and chronic fatigue, I was poleaxed by severe back pain. My other symptoms intensified and multiplied. Five doctors and an osteopath provisionally diagnosed me with autoimmune disease. Ankylosing Spondylitis, Crohn's disease and Celiac disease were the leading suspects. One doctor told me that I was, 'the worst autoimmune patient I have ever seen.' At my worst, I needed a wheelchair to travel more than 200 feet due to chronic hip and back pain. For four months I was unable to eat anything other than 1000 daily calories of mushrooms, almond milk and cucumbers because I reacted terribly to all other foods. I could only sleep in a sun lounger. I had visible ribs and looked like a prisoner of war. With my procedures cancelled due to lockdown, I was left to fend for myself.

In my desperation, I prayed for help. Then I found Healing Back Pain, a book by Dr. John Sarno. Doctor Sarno identified misunderstanding, fear and repressed emotions as the causes of most pain and other symptoms. His advice was to ‘think psychological’ and resume normal activities.
