A leather bound copy of this literary collaboration between the prominent authors Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift, the works notable for their satirical humour. In six volumes. Containing Volumes I-VI. Volumes I-IV were published in 1736. Volume IV is stated as 'the last volume' to the title page. Volume V and VI were published in 1738. Volume IV was particularly important due to it's being the first appearance of thirteen poems by Alexander Pope, including 'Sinking in Poetry', and sixteen new poems by Jonathan Swift, including five poems for 'Stella's Birthday'. Published anonymously. Written by Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift, with contributions by various other authors, including John Arbuthnot and John Gay. The work was a collaboration between Pope and Swift, written at the height of their friendship as two satrisits, and intended to commemorate their friendship. Jonathan Swift was an Irish writer, with an emphasis on satirical political topics. 'Gulliver's Travels' is widely regarded as Swift's masterpiece, though he saw a lot of success in his other works during his lifetime. He wrote various essays and political pamphlets, as well as poetry and sermons. Alexander Pope was one of the most popular poets of the eighteenth century. Best known for this work, he also translation editions of the 'Iliad'', as well as writing 'Essay on Criticism', 'The Dunciad', and 'An Essay on Man'. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'Jeremiah Dixon'. Dixon was an astronomer and surveyor, who is best known for his work with Charles Mason. One page of publisher's adverts to the rear of Volume III. One page of publisher's adverts to the front of Volume IV. Two pages of publisher's adverts to the front of Volume V, and five pages to the rear. In the original full speckled calf binding. Externally, sound. Surface cracks to the spine. Bumping tot he head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Joints and hinges of Volume I are starting but firm. Front board of Volume II is held by cords only and may detach with further handling, and the rear hinge and joint are starting but firm. Hinges and joints of Volume III are starting but firm. Front hinge and joint of Volume IV are starting but firm, and the rear hinge is strained but remains firm. Front hinge of Volume V is weak. Front hinge of Volume VI is starting but firm, and the rear hinge is weak. Bookplate and library label to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound.
