Frontispiece detached. With prefaces by the printer (in Hebrew and in German in Hebrew letters) and the translator (in Hebrew), including prefaces from previous Offenbach editions. With occasional annotations to the Biblical text by the printer ("He'ara min ha-madpis"). Added title page decorated with an engraving bearing the caption "Kapah parsa la'ani." Text with Rashi (1040-1105) commentary, on facing page translation into German (written in Hebrew characters) by Isaac Abraham Euchel. With Mikhlal yofi by Shelomoh ibn Melekh. Lelet shikheah is the name of Jacob and Isaac Abendanah's supra commentary on the Pentateuch. Presumably, (Tosefet) leket shikhekhaq is Jacob Abendanah's continuation of this supra commentary. Includes "Imre binah ave-Musar haskel al Sefer Mishle" Fols.131-142 recto. With a glossary of French words written in Hebrew letters in Rashi's commentary. Transcribed into French in Latin characters and translated into German - fol. 142 verso. Not recorded by Steinschneider CB, Cowley and BM Hebrew (Zedner). The Nazis' plan was to murder all the Jews in the world and then have a record of an extinct people. This copy was one of those chosen by the Nazis for this institution. Signatures and inscriptions in Hebrew or Judeo German by former owners. On blank facing the title page with the plate: "Shlomo Lowenstein. Zum andankan einem fraint fon Hirsch[] [] Yaakov un [] Wednesday the third day in the the month of Tishrey [5]623 [=27 September 1862]. On the title page, in Hebrew: I bought Mishley from Rabbi Kalman Eitigen. [Hey.kuf. samekh. khaf.?] Zum andenken meinem fraint.[ = As a memento to my friend] Signatures in Hebrew characters and Arabic numerals. Mis-bound: the 12th and 13th leaves, which are part of the second preface appear after leaf 7, which is in the first preface. 1, 13, 142 leaves. The blank at the end of the book is filled with handwritten material. It consists of alternative translations to what Eichel, the translator had provided. The last five lines deal with the word "shanim" in the famous "Woman of Valor" section. Eichel wrote that it refers to a double wool fabric, which since the lady's household had, would provide insulation from the snow, which is therefore nothing to fear. But the writer here states that 'shahim" refers to "years" . Of course there are other interpretations of this word, such as that "shamim" fefers to "two" as in shnayim. and that snow is not a problem because the lady saw to it that the house is "clothed' in TWO layers of insulation. Eichel's translation here follows in the footsteps of Moses Mendelsohn who felt that Yiddish as spoken and written by the people was a distortion of the German, and both Mendelsohn and Eichel attempted "to correct" the rich and vibrant Yiddish language and force it into the confines of "pure" German.
