Beschreibung
Routledge, London, 1892, original edition; 8vo, 130 x 187mm; pp 276 + 12pp catalogue of Routledge publications; yellow chromoxylography pictorial paper boards, decorated spine and with an advert for Pears' soap on the back cover; covers, hinges and corners rubbed as often typical, paper slightly browned, hinges weak though the book block is quite firm; early ownership inscription on the front cover. . . This is a very typical example of a late Victorian yellow-back targeted primarily at the growing number of rail travellers. Routledge was particularly active in this market and published well over a thousand different titles. Although the quality of writing wasn't the main considerations authors included the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson, R S Surtees, W S Gilbert and other recognises authors. This particular title appears to be a romantic quest although as the hero, Captain Lawrence, begins by pairing Yquem with oysters to start his meal, perhaps he's more cavalier than dashing as he later tussles with "dastardly Mormons" on a train going through the Rockies. . . . As with this example, the back covers, both pastedowns and both flies carried adverts both small and large and frequently imaginatively marketing patent remedies of dubious benefit - plus ça change . - and works to stiffen the moral character.
