Inhaltsangabe: MISSION TO CIVILIZE THE FRENCH WAY is not a history book. It is a journalistic piece written as an analysis of facts as they are found. The fact is that France, along with the other great European powers, colonized much of the globe. The French continue to maintain a relationship with its former holdings because of language, cuisine, self-esteem, and culture--the classic exchange of ideas that ultimately influence a people or nation. Parts covered in the book are: **The Mission (France; the French; France d'Outre-mer; Corsica--Empire at Home); **The Old Empires (From Gauls to Franks; Spreading the Word; Building an Empire; Into the New World; Revolution and the Emperors; Mission in Full Glory; End of Empire); and **The New Empire (Africa I--Trompe-l'Oeil; Africa II--Chasse Gardee; North Africa--Beurs and Beaufs; Middle East--Hall of Mirrors; Asia and the Pacific--Kanaky and La Bombe; Canada--A Few Acres of Snow; United States--Les Amerloques; Caribbean and Latin America--La Question; Europe--In the New Old World; A Modern Mission). Index and bibliography included.
From Library Journal:
This book provides a well-informed and highly readable account of the French empire over the centuries. In an era when most other empires have collapsed, the French have succeeded in maintaining much of the reality of their empire even though formal sovereignty has passed to the hands of local governments. Privileged economic, political, and military ties with former colonies are reinforced by lingering cultural ties in former French possessions that received independence decades or even centuries ago. Rosenblum, an American journalist in Paris, shows how the French emphasis on civilizing rather than colonizing has made France a cultural superpower. There is pretense and hypocrisy in this continuing empire, but also desirable self-esteem and pride in France's mission civilisatrice . Frank L. Wilson, Political Science Dept., Purdue Univ., W.
