Vol. 87, No. 6, stated "Modern Art Number." Cover by George Inness and Howard Greenley. Color frontispiece by Frederic Frieseke. Tall octavo. 813-971, 76 (ads) pp. Illustrated throughout, including reproductions of work by Joseph Stella, Matisse, and Picasso among others. Wrappers with some edgewear and some loss and short splits at the spine ends, cover with a vertical crease, very good and sound. Special "Modern Art Number," containing a 51-page section devoted to modern art with a focus on Cubism and Post-Impressionism. Titled "This Transitional Age in Art," it includes: "Is Our Art Distinctly American?" by John W. Alexander; "The Painting of To-Day" by Edwin H. Blashfield; "The Painting of To-morrow" by Ernest L. Blumenschein; "The Point of View of the 'Moderns'" by Walter Pach; and "The Ancestry of Cubism" by Jay and Cove Hambidge. The issue also includes "The Forerunner of the Movies" by Brander Matthews. Sadakichi Hartmann and Jane Calhoun Weaver have called this issue "[t]he most comprehensive critical attempt at evaluating the new art… ." This issue also contains "The Dog Harvey," a new story by Rudyard Kipling, "Menace" by George Sterling, "To My Little Son" by Pauline Florence Brower, and contributions by William Rose Benét and Robert Browning.
