Pen annots in old hand to verso front free endpaper, noting 'q. whether the Initials 'E. H.' on the title-page of this copy are not those of Dr. Hawarden?'. This is still an open question, but is quite possible: this would be Edward Hawarden (1662-1735), eminent Catholic theologian and controversialist. Decorated initials and headpieces. Mild damp-rippling and minor scattered foxing. No publisher or place of publication, but Blom suggests London and Mitchell argues that this is, like all Manning's works written in England, printed in London by Thomas Howlatt, a Catholic printer also used by Edward Hawarden (Mitchell 40, 43). Published anonymously, but securely attributed to Robert Manning (1655-1731), Catholic priest and controversialist. Born in Amsterdam to an English father and Dutch mother, he was educated at Douai, where he rose to become professor of humanities and philosophy. Missioned to England in 1692, served as chaplain to Lord Petre at Ingatestone Hall, Essex. Dodd notes that his controversial writings were 'much esteemed by the learned; especially on account of his easy, and flowing stile' (Dodd 3, 488). Manning was, with 'Hawarden and later Challoner', 'one of the leading Catholic polemicists of the age' (ODNB). Blom 1745. Mitchell, C.
