3 maps at the rear including a large folding map of the Indonesian Archipelago, another of Java, Madura, and Bali and another of South Central Java. Black and white photographic frontispiece, xi + 281pp, appendices, glossary, bibliography, index. Edges slightly browned and baperback cover with faint signs of use but overall a good clean and firm copy. 'It is argued here that the Javanese chronicle studied in this volume and related Javanese materials show the existence of a strong tradition of accurate historical writing in the Mataram court at least until the later seventeenth century, but that thereafter, and particularly in the later eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a notable decline of accuracy and increasing mythicization can be seen.'
