Ed. Frossard: Monograph of United States Cents and Half Cents issued between the years 1793 and 1857: To which is added a table of the principal coins, tokens, jetons, medalets, patterns of coinage and Washington pieces, generally classed under the head of colonial coins. A contribution to the numismatic history of the United States New York, 1879, 58 pages, 9 fine heliotype plates with die marriage ligatures drawn in red ink on the first two and partially on two others, 1940s quarter leather binding maroon cloth sides, gilt printed teal front wrapper bound in. An attractive fine copy. Davis 400. One of 300 copies supposedly produced, this unnumbered example was bound in Brooklyn by B. A. Martin in the identical style used by Kosoff for the deluxe edition of the 1945 World?s Great Collection of Gold/ Silver catalogues and by Stack?s for the special 1944 Hall and Bell editions. The first comprehensive monograph to address the varieties of all dates of large cents, it was the standard until replaced by the Proskey/Doughty work in 1890. Eight of the heliotype plates depict large cents from the Merritt Collection, and the ninth illustrates colonials from the cabinet of Loren Parmelee to whom Frossard gives thanks in Numisma for the loan of coins. ?While at Boston for the purpose of having the coins of Mr Geo. W. Merritt photographed, we unexpectedly found that it was imperatively necessary to have two specimens of the same coin to obtain a proper impression of the obverse and reverse on the same plate. In our dilemma, we applied to Mr. Loring G. Parmelee who with characteristic confidence and generosity placed his entire collection at our disposal.? This would infer that some of the images on the plates are not from Merritt coins and that the plates may not have been intended for a plate version of the catalogue.
