Small folio (32cm), attractive contemporary brown calf with gold border on boards, and central fleuron, spine with raised bands, pastedowns and flyleaves in marbled paper, a good copy. Engraved baroque allegorical title-page ff. (2 incl. front.), pp. 176, (86 nn.), containing 125 engraved plates depicting tombs, monuments and funerary inscriptions related to major Italian and Latin characters of Roman antiquity, the Middle ages, and the Renaissance (such as Livy, Euripides, Pliny, Virgil, Sannazaro, Dante, Ariosto, Marsilio Ficino, Poliziano, L. Aretino, L. Valla, Pico della Mirandola) sited in several Italian cities (Rome, Padua, Volterra, Ferrara, Perugia, Pisa, Bologna). Fourth edition, previously published in 1574, 1585, 1589. Siegfried Rybisch, a prominent citizen of Breslau in Silesia, commissioned the local artist Tobias Fendt to engrave this suite of etchings from a collection of sketches of funeral monuments, marble inscriptions and epitaphs which Rybisch gathered on a visit to Italy, therefore the present work is a very valuable source for knowledge of the state of these monuments in the sixteenth century.
