Can every life in a small town be turned topsy-turvy in just two weeks? Can it all be set right in one frantic moonlit night in the town cemetery? Yes, and yes. Welcome to Volney, Missouri. It is 1963. Peter Basque, a has-been artist, has just cruised into town. Why? An elite art institute in Chicago wants him to persuade a local farmboy, who is also the finest painter to come along in a generation, to attend the school. Peter entangles every peculiar heart and soul in town in his effort to separate the young artist from the only world, and the only girlfriend, he has ever known. Peter's schemes unearth old loves and heartaches, and new longings and desires, across Volney. By the time Peter's tangled knot slips, every person in town is forced to confront a new and unexpected future. This includes Peter. Meanwhile, every building in town has been painted pink.
